Course Description: As a  member of the Department of War’s (DOW) workforce, your role in protecting national security is more critical than ever. You are not just a user of information; you are its protector. The DOW Initial Orientation and Awareness Training course equips you with baseline security knowledge to recognize and respond to threats against national security assets and information.

The Challenge: Moving beyond mere compliance, this course challenges you to become a proactive champion for security awareness. We ask you to actively engage with and embrace the 5-R Security Awareness Framework: Review, Recognize, React, Reference, and Report.

The Outcome: This framework is a practical tool designed to sharpen your focus and hone your security instincts. By mastering these principles, you will be empowered to serve as a steadfast guardian of national security and help foster a stronger culture of security in the workplace.

  • Civilian employees of the DOW
  • DOW contractor employees

Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Determine how the Personnel Security Program ( PSP), protects national security by establishing the vetting and investigative standards, criteria, and guidelines for personnel security eligibility or trust determinations. 
  • Determine the requirements for protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) throughout its life cycle per DOW regulatory guidance.
  • Determine the requirements for protecting classified national security information throughout its life cycle per DOW regulatory guidance.
  • Determine how the public release process protects national security information through prepublication security and policy review.
  • Explain the Physical Security Program and its role in protecting DOW assets. 
  • Explain the role of Operations Security (OPSEC), in protecting DOW activities, critical information, operations, and assets.
  • Determine the indicators and reporting requirements for insider threat.
  • Identify the reporting requirements and other considerations associated with foreign travel.
Training Scope and Applicability: This course is designed to consolidate foundational security awareness processes, procedures, and core principles, specifically aligning with the requirements outlined in DODM 5200.01, Volume 3, Enclosure 5. While it provides a robust baseline, it is not intended to automatically satisfy all security training mandates. DOW components retain sole authority to determine which of their specific annual mandatory training requirements are fulfilled by completing this course. CDSE cannot make this validation on behalf of any component; therefore, all training credit determinations must be made in accordance with applicable regulatory guidance and local command policies.
