Description: This course examines the ways in which a senior security manager can use the principles of risk analysis and risk management to better position a defense organization, process, or mission to anticipate and mitigate adverse events and consequences and to pursue new opportunities. This course expands the study of risk to include threats, consequences and impacts of events, the value of assets, and a broad view of countermeasures and vulnerabilities. The course examines the concept of risk "gain" in risk management decisions and the ability to calculate and package the analysis for presentation to decision-makers in a comprehensible, consistent, and objective fashion.
Course Learning Outcomes: This course will enable students to:
- Discuss risk management philosophies and methodologies used across agencies.
- Discuss challenges in determining vulnerabilities of programs, operations, facilities, or organizations.
- Compare strengths and weaknesses of vulnerability assessments and risk assessment tools.
- Develop a quantifiable cost-benefit analysis to protect assets.
- Develop a comprehensive and balanced risk analysis and propose recommendations to agency leadership.
- Theorize how multiple layers of security impact overall risk reduction.

- Attendance Requirements: This course requires students to complete weekly assignments including reading, research and writing assignments similar to those required for a three semester hour graduate-level course. Students must make significant commitment of time to complete these assignments.
- Credit Recommendation: None. This course is designed to equate to three credit hours at the graduate level.
